News You May Have Missed: Nicotine Poisoning Cases Are On The Decline
Nicotine Poisoning Cases Have Dramatically Fallen From 2014
In 2014 there were nearly 4000 reported cases of nicotine poisoning. That number has steadily decreased in 2 years with only 1038 cases reported so far this year. The reports included cases where people had "exposure to nicotine" meaning that it had contacted their skin, been inhaled, got in their eyes, etc. So the amount of reports of nicotine being ingested from the mouth to the stomach could be significantly lowered as well.
More Poisonings From Household Cleaners Than That of Vapor Products
CASSA found that the number of poisonings from food and household cleaners far surpasses any e-liquid related exposures. You can see the full report here. Below we've listed the two glaring comparisons.
- E-cigarette/nicotine liquid total exposures: 29 (Children under 12: 21%) Deaths: 0 Major injury: 0 Moderate: 1 Minor: 11
- Household Cleaners total exposures: 180,493 (Children under 12: 65%) Deaths: 21 Major injury: 194 Moderate: 4,492 Minor: 71,219
CASSA also found several cases of nicotine poisoning from nicotine lozenges from pharmaceutical companies. E-liquid has undergone some serious scrutiny on packaging and labeling guidelines while smoking cessation products like the lozenges have flown under the radar as far as safe packaging and clear label warnings go.
Safe Practices For Vapers
We can continue to to drive these numbers down if we all practice safe handling of e-liquid and any other vapor products.
- Keep all vapor products high up and out of reach of children
- Only use bottles/products with child-resistant packaging
- If you build coils, use a magnet to pick up any wire clippings
- Turn your vaporizer off when not in use
- Talk to your kids and explain what the products are used for
- Immediately and thoroughly clean any e-liquid drops or spills
- Take caution when refilling tanks and dripping atomizers, should skin contact occur immediately rinse affected area with soap and warm water
